Cicero Gavar

Cicero was born in Citte della Ombre as a Contadani, the maskless poor class that makes up most of the population. He, alongside his brother Cyrus, were terrors growing up, getting into fights and somehow making lasting friends with people along the way. Two more important moments in Cicero's life in his childhood and teenage years is meeting the Head Songstress Mira Bas and getting arrested in a way that made him realize he too wanted to join the upper ranks of society in some form and declared he was going to become a Portieri like the ones who arrested him (who beat him up for being a pain in the ass, but still).

He would go on to take the Accredita and Vamus tests and it's during then that he'd meet Razitof Azrus, who would help him pass the tests to become a Portieri and the two would become friends after that. At some point after his tests, Cicero would become an Inspettore, one of the seven that worked in all of Ombre. Cicero would also use his position at the Registry to help Cyrus become in charge of the Mascherines. This would eventually backfire as unlike Cicero, Cyrus was bitter against those in the Masquerada using the Mascherines to treat the Contadani like trash and become the leader of the Malacarte faction of the Maskrunners and bring all other factions under his flag.

In his position as an Inspettore, Cicero was charged with finding out who was leading the Maskrunners and upon finding out it was his own brother, confronted Cyrus and was given a choice: join Cyrus and the Maskrunners or stay loyal to the Registry. Cicero ended up choosing neither option and never informed the Vaorone as to who was in charge. It would later get out that Cyrus was the leader the Registry was looking for as the city fell into a civil war and people found out that Cicero knew before it was common knowledge. Once Cyrus was killed in an attack on the Registry to steal more Mascherines, Cicero was arrested and tried for the crime of treason. While he would have been hanged, Razitof used most of his political pull to save Cicero from death and he was instead exiled from the city.

For the next five years, Cicero would go from tavern to tavern, drinking his life away. This would end when a letter from the Vaorone asked him to return to his position as Inspettore, his exile being lifted and he would be paid an incredible amount of money for doing so. Wanting the money to give to his parents, Cicero boards a ship and heads back to the Citte to solve a case nobody else could, as the other Inspettore who were put on the case were killed.

Citte della Ombre: Know as either the Citte or Ombre, it's where the game takes place. It's the only place where Mascherines are found and due to that, the city is split up between those who have them (the Masquerada) and those who don't (the Contadani). Thanks to Cyrus Gavar, a faction of Contadani known as Maskrunners has gotten a hold of Mascherines
Contadani: Anyone in Ombre without a Mascherine. The lower and middle class make up the Contadani and are treated as lesser by the Masquerada because of it. Contadani can join the Masquerada through a number of means, but it's difficult and not many Contadani are able to gain a Mascherine.
Mascherines: Originally created by Dimenticate, the Mascherines are masks who give the wearers magical powers. To have a Mascherine in Ombre is to be a part of the ruling class, the Registry or one of the guilds, though the Maskrunners' existence has started to destroy that line. If one was to use too much of a Mascherine's power, the user would undergo Salting, an event that causes a person to lose their mind, feel excruciating pain, and eventually die. When a person wearing a Mascherine dies, their Mascherine fades away into nothing and cannot be retrieved.
Masquerada: The ruling class of Ombre, people who are part of the Masquerada all have a Mascherine and find themselves either being a member of one of the Citte's guilds or a part of the Registry. Just as Contadani can become Masquerada, so too can Masquerada become Contadani, usually not by choice though.
Registry: The Registry is the closest thing to a government that Ombre has and even then they're kept in check by the guilds. The Registry is made of up three major groups: the Regenti, the Vegilus, and the Portieri. The Regenti are the politicians and economists of the Registry, the Vegilus are the researchers, and the Portieri are the police force. The person who is in charge of the Registry as a whole is known as the Vaorone and his personally selected elite subordinates are known as the Inspettore.
